La Malaquita carries two lines of hats, made especially for us. The first are the traditional local JipiJapi Panama style hats, which are hand dyed and hand woven in bespoke colors for us by a family in Becal in the state of Campeche. There are three generations involved in the hat making process – they grow their own fiber, it is then cleaned and processed, then dyed with natural vegetable dyes and cured, all on their property, on top of their cave, in which the hats are woven by the mother and grandmother on wood molds. It takes nearly three months to produce one of our orders.
The second hat, the classically elegant Estrella Hat, is hand dyed and woven in Eastern Africa, and imported three times a year to us in Merida.
It is possible to make special orders for both color and quantity, please contact us with any requests.
