Spectacular 1970s Josefa Ibarra Mexican Caftan Dress

Description:  Spectacular 1970s Josefa Ibarra Mexican Caftan Dress

  • – As the interest in these Josefa pieces increases, I am increasingly reticent to part with those in my collection…this is an exceptional representation of “La Gran Josefa” at the peak of her powers, incorporating many of the techniques which she employed in her workshop in Lake Chapala.  There is applique, embroidery and those wonderful long tassels all in vibrant colors on the vivid green dyed manta cotton.  Josefa was one of the leaders of the movement associated with these splendid pieces from Mexico during the 1960s and 1970s, and she was discovered by Elizabeth Taylor whilst in Puerto Vallarta in 1963 with Richard Burton, who was filming John Huston’s Night of the Iguana.  Josefa then became a favorite of celebrities and royalty including Grace Kelly, Happy Rockefeller, Fara Dibah, Diana Ross, Princes Anne, and many others.  This is a unique representation of wearable art from a specific period in Mexican history.
